Update your delegation
Delegates are the heart of the Western Mass Area Labor Federation (WMALF). Through their voices, we coordinate solidarity actions, provide education and training, and represent labor’s interests across Western Massachusetts.
When your union sends active delegates, you strengthen the power of all workers Western Mass. Delegates can be updated only by the principal officer of the affiliate (this may be the President, Business Manager, or another leadership position).

The Role of a Delegate
Delegates are the official representatives of their local union to the WMALF. They connect the work of their local to the wider labor movement. The responsibilities include:
- Attend monthly delegate meetings (typically one evening per month, 1.5 hours).
- Participate in WMALF committees, campaigns or events each year
- This may include participation in committees such as the Education Committee, the Young Workers Committee or the Racial Justice committee
- It could also include helping with solidarity actions or planning the Labor Day March
- Bring information to the ALF and communicate needs for support.
- Bring news, education opportunities, and asks from the area labor movement back to their Local.
- Vote on the issues that shape the regional labor agenda
- Help build solidarity by turning out members for actions and campaigns that benefit working people
Time Commitment
The role typically involves 5–6 hours per month:
- Delegate meetings: Once a month, in-person, alternating between Springfield and Northampton. We are planning to provide options for virtual participation in the future
- Committee or campaign work: Often 1–2 hours monthly, although this may vary throughout the year
- Communication: Sharing updates with your local or mobilizing members
Why Your Local Should Appoint Delegates
When affiliates are active, the WMALF can:
- Coordinate support for strikes, organizing drives, and contract fights
- Build a unified political voice for workers across Western Massachusetts
- Partner effectively with community allies
- Develop leaders and strengthen member engagement across locals
Without active delegates, a local’s voice isn’t at the table and decisions that affect your members may be made without your input.
